Ask what result is included after the first visit and whether any follow-up is priced separately. If mulching is suggested, request the material and depth separately from the weeding labour. The cheapest initial visit may not cover the regrowth plan you want.

The details that change the price

The method matters as much as the first tidy appearance. Ask which weeds are being tackled, how roots will be managed and what follow-up may be needed rather than assuming a single visit is permanent.

What to put in your quote request

Good details reduce the chance of comparing different jobs. Include the following before asking for a price.

Compare the whole offer

Put each quote alongside the same checklist: agreed work, included materials, removal and disposal, visit length or completion basis, and proposed dates. Ask whether the total includes any applicable VAT and extra charges. Do not compare a labour-only offer with an all-in price.

If the scope changes after a visit, ask for the revised price before the additional work starts. Payment and any deposit arrangements should be clear in writing before you accept a booking.

The root problem matters more than the visible cover

Weeding a newly seeded bed is different from separating established perennial weeds from valued planting. Tell the gardener whether weeds return in the same places and whether previous work removed roots or only cut the surface growth. If identification is uncertain, request an assessment rather than promising that a single visit will solve it.

Beds, paving and lawns need separate instructions

List the surfaces to be treated. Removing weeds among ornamental plants takes a different approach from clearing joints in paving. Mark self-seeded flowers or ground-cover plants that should remain so they are not removed simply because they appear unplanned.

State any preference for hand removal or other non-chemical methods before quotes arrive. If a provider proposes a product, ask for its name, suitability for the site and any access or aftercare instructions. Product use should be agreed explicitly; do not assume a weeding visit includes spraying.

Price prevention separately from removal

Once the immediate weeds are dealt with, discuss follow-up visits, planting cover or mulch as separate choices. A quote should show the preparation and materials required, as well as the initial labour. Compare the proposed plan over a useful period rather than expecting permanent weed-free soil from one appointment.
