There is no single price for every garden

Use the published benchmark above as an initial budgeting reference, then request a price for the actual job. It is third-party guidance rather than a rate set by Get Gardening Quotes. Compare the same scope, tax basis and extras before accepting any offer.

Ask for the first visit and repeat visits to be priced separately if the garden has fallen behind. Write down your priorities for a visit with a time limit. Agree how work rolls over when weather or a seasonal task uses more time than expected.

The details that change the price

Agree a job list as well as a visit length. For regular care, ask how weather delays, seasonal changes and extra work are handled, and whether the first visit has a different price.

What to put in your quote request

Good details reduce the chance of comparing different jobs. Include the following before asking for a price.

• List the jobs in order of importance
• Choose one-off, weekly, fortnightly or seasonal help
• Mention pets, locked gates and access times
• Ask what can realistically be completed within each visit

Compare the whole offer

Put each quote alongside the same checklist: agreed work, included materials, removal and disposal, visit length or completion basis, and proposed dates. Ask whether the total includes any applicable VAT and extra charges. Do not compare a labour-only offer with an all-in price.

If the scope changes after a visit, ask for the revised price before the additional work starts. Payment and any deposit arrangements should be clear in writing before you accept a booking.

Compare a maintenance programme, not one attractive visit

Ask for a schedule showing the first reset, ordinary visits and separately priced seasonal work. A monthly payment may spread the price of a programme rather than promise the same number of visits every month. Confirm the expected visit count, what happens in quieter periods and whether missed visits are rearranged or credited.

With an hourly arrangement, agree the order of tasks when time runs out. With a fixed visit price, record the tasks or standard of finish covered. Do not assume that pruning, materials, leaf collection and waste removal all sit inside a mowing-and-weeding price.

Plan the work you can do between visits

A useful maintenance plan gives each task an owner. You might water containers while the gardener handles mowing and borders; a landlord might need the provider to manage everything because nobody is regularly at the property. Access to a tap does not mean watering is included.

The RHS explains that mulch can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. If you want this added, request a separate specification for the material, area, preparation and delivery. It changes the job being priced; it is not evidence that a particular visit will be cheaper.

A recurring-care brief for WhatsApp

Example to adapt: “Please quote separately for the initial tidy-up and ongoing visits. My priorities are keeping the lawn usable, managing weeds in the planted beds and keeping the path clear. Please explain your suggested frequency, what you bring, where cuttings go and which seasonal jobs are extra.”

Request a review after the first visit using the actual garden condition. Agree how either side can change or end the arrangement, how notice is given and who authorises additional work. A recurring booking should remain understandable when the season and the garden change.
