Choose the visit pattern with the gardener
You can request weekly, fortnightly, monthly, seasonal or one-off help. The suitable pattern depends on growth and the tasks, not only the size of the garden. Ask how the first catch-up differs from routine visits, what happens to the price during winter and whether a pause or change needs notice. Year-round care must be agreed rather than presumed.
Agree access when nobody is home
Tell the provider who opens gates, controls shared access and approves extras. For a rental, share the landlord’s or managing agent’s agreed task list and the authorised contact. Being away may be workable if access is arranged, but do not treat the initial request as agreement to unattended entry.
Include waste, feeding and seasonal work deliberately
Mowing, weeding, light pruning and hedge care can be requested together. Ask whether the ordinary visit includes removal and how materials or longer seasonal jobs are charged. Plant feeding and health checks should be named in the scope; a general maintenance price does not promise diagnosis, disease treatment or the recovery of an unhealthy plant.

A monthly fee needs an expected visit schedule and a list of separately charged work. An hourly arrangement needs a time allowance and priorities when time runs out. Ask for the first visit, routine work, materials and removal to be identifiable in the price so a cheaper headline is not simply a shorter or more limited service.

Garden maintenance can include lawn mowing, weeding, pruning, hedge tidying, border care, leaf clearing and general seasonal upkeep. The exact scope depends on the garden and the provider. When you request quotes, describe the work you need so providers can price the same job on a comparable basis.
How much does garden maintenance cost?
There is no fixed national price for garden maintenance. The gardener sets the quote after reviewing your job. The main factors are garden size and the mix of jobs, visit frequency and time allowed each visit, condition at the first visit and materials and waste arrangements. Ask for the scope, materials and disposal charges to be clear before you book.
How often should I book garden maintenance?
The right frequency depends on the garden and time of year. Weekly or fortnightly visits can suit fast-growing lawns, hedges and borders in spring and summer, while lower-maintenance gardens may only need monthly or seasonal visits. Ask providers to quote for the frequency you realistically need.
Can I book a gardener for a one-off job?
Yes. Many gardening jobs are one-off rather than recurring, including tidy-ups, pruning, weeding and pre-sale garden work. Tell our team what needs doing and whether the job is one-off or ongoing so the request can be sent to providers who are interested and available.
Does garden maintenance include waste removal?
Not automatically. Some providers include green-waste removal in the price, while others charge separately. Check the quote carefully and make waste removal part of the original request if you need it, especially for pruning, hedge cutting or larger seasonal tidy-ups.
Do I need to be home when the gardener comes?
You may be able to arrange a visit while you are out if the provider agrees safe access and a clear task list. Confirm gates, pets, shared areas, equipment access and who can approve changes. Keep access instructions in your direct conversation; do not assume an enquiry authorises entry.
