A first cut can be a different job
Show the present grass height and any concealed obstacles. Very long grass may need preparation and staged cutting before routine mowing is practical. Ask for the initial visit and repeat cuts to be priced separately; a regular-maintenance rate is not a promise that an overgrown lawn will cost the same to restore.
Weekly or fortnightly is a starting conversation
The RHS relates mowing to growth, weather and lawn style. Request your preferred routine, then agree how wet, frosty or slow-growing conditions change it. Name any wildlife area to leave long. Spring start dates and winter pauses should respond to the lawn’s condition rather than being guaranteed by a fixed month.
State the finish beyond the mower
Ask for edging, strimming around obstacles, clearing paths and handling clippings explicitly. Tell the gardener whether clippings may be mulched or retained in an agreed place, or must leave. Feeding, scarifying, repairs and weed treatment are additional tasks unless included; mowing alone does not renovate a damaged lawn.
Small and large lawns need the actual dimensions
Share approximate area, separate lawn sections, slopes and the narrowest gate. A small lawn may still have a minimum visit charge; a large one may need different equipment. Photos help, but ask the provider to confirm both the time allowance and final price after considering access and the requested finish.

How much does lawn mowing cost?
There is no fixed national price for lawn mowing & grass cutting. The gardener sets the quote after reviewing your job. The main factors are approximate lawn area, grass length and ground condition, slopes, steps and narrow access and frequency, edging and clipping removal. Ask for the scope, materials and disposal charges to be clear before you book.
How often should a lawn be cut?
During the main growing season, many lawns are cut weekly or fortnightly. Growth slows in colder months, so mowing is usually needed less often. The best schedule depends on grass growth, weather and the finish you want. Providers can quote for either a one-off cut or regular visits.
What is included in a lawn mowing service?
A basic service normally covers cutting the grass, but edging, strimming, clearing clippings and treating the lawn may be separate. Tell our team exactly what you want included so every provider is quoting against the same job and you can compare prices properly.
Does lawn mowing include grass clipping removal?
Sometimes, but not always. Some providers collect and remove clippings, some use mulching mowers and some leave bagged clippings for the homeowner. If you want all grass waste removed, include that requirement when requesting quotes so providers can price it correctly.
Does an overgrown lawn cost more to cut?
It can require extra preparation, staged cutting and more clipping handling than a maintained lawn. Ask the provider to price the first cut separately from repeat visits; the amount of any difference depends on the actual grass, area and access.
Can I book regular grass cutting?
You can request weekly, fortnightly or another suitable schedule. Include edging, strimming and clipping removal in the brief. The gardener confirms availability and a pattern suited to growth and weather, with the first cut priced separately if the lawn needs extra preparation.
