Define the job

What can be included?

Use this as a starting brief. Your gardener’s quote should confirm the exact tasks and finish.

  • Agreed bed and border maintenance
  • A discussion of watering and mulching needs
  • Seasonal care for existing planting
  • Plant-specific recommendations where the provider has suitable expertise

What needs a separate agreement?

  • Guaranteed recovery of a diseased plant
  • Unspecified pesticides or fertilisers
  • New landscaping or planting materials without agreement

Ask before adding work on the day. A changed brief can change the time, equipment and price.

Understand the price

What affects plant & border care costs?

A photograph alone may not identify the cause of poor growth. Give the gardener context and ask what can reasonably be assessed on the visit before paying for treatments.

Compare quotes on the same basis: the work, total price, materials, waste and timing. An hourly rate alone does not tell you the final cost.

Before you book

Start with symptoms and growing conditions

Send photos of the whole plant and affected leaves, and explain when the change began, watering, recent planting and any products already used. A photograph can support an initial conversation, but it may not establish a diagnosis. Ask whether the provider has relevant experience and whether a specialist assessment is needed before paying for treatment.

Diagnosis is different from a recovery guarantee

Poor growth can have several causes. Ask the provider to explain what they can assess, what remains uncertain and which proposed work addresses the likely cause. Some plants may be helped without replacement, while others may not recover. Agree the scope and any follow-up; the marketplace does not guarantee the result of a diagnosis or treatment.

Agree feeding and materials for the actual plants

There is no single feeding frequency for every garden plant. Identify the plants, proposed product, quantity, application and aftercare before purchase. Weeding, edging, mulching, removing dead plants and plant-health checks can be included in care of beds and borders when named in the quotation. Separate materials and specialist pest or disease treatment from routine upkeep.

Your questions, answered

What does border care include?

It can include agreed weeding, pruning, mulching and general upkeep. Materials and specialist treatments should be specified separately.

Can you guarantee a plant will recover?

No. The cause, plant condition and growing conditions all affect the outcome. Ask the provider what they can assess and what remains uncertain.

Are plants and compost included?

Only if the quote includes them. Agree the product, quantity and cost before extra materials are purchased.

Can I request care without chemical treatments?

Yes. Explain your preference in the request so the gardener can discuss suitable methods and limitations.

What does plant care cost?

The provider quotes for the agreed work, plants or beds involved, visit length and materials. There is no fixed national price.
