Shrub pruning
quotes near you.

Ask for pruning that suits your shrubs and the result you want. Identify the plants where possible and discuss timing before requesting a hard cut back.

Pricing depends on your garden, access and the work involved. The gardener sets the price; requesting a quote is free.

Define the job

What can be included?

Use this as a starting brief. Your gardener’s quote should confirm the exact tasks and finish.

  • Pruning agreed shrubs at an appropriate time
  • Removing selected dead or unwanted growth
  • Managing size and shape where suitable
  • Collecting or removing prunings if included

What needs a separate agreement?

  • Tree surgery and protected-tree work
  • A blanket hard cut across unidentified plants
  • Guaranteed flowering or recovery

Ask before adding work on the day. A changed brief can change the time, equipment and price.

Understand the price

What affects shrub pruning costs?

Avoid asking for every shrub to be cut to the same height. Different plants respond differently to pruning, so the quote should state the agreed approach and whether any work should wait.

Compare quotes on the same basis: the work, total price, materials, waste and timing. An hourly rate alone does not tell you the final cost.

Before you book

Identify the plants before choosing a month

Different shrubs flower on different growth and need different pruning decisions. Include leaf, stem and flower photographs where available. The RHS advises pruning many early-flowering deciduous shrubs after flowering. Ask the provider to identify the plants and explain the proposed timing rather than cutting every shrub on the same calendar rule.

Explain why the plant needs reducing

State whether you want access restored, flowering retained, privacy protected or an overgrown plant renovated. Light shaping and substantial reduction can have very different effects. Request a plant-by-plant scope where the garden contains several species, and mark anything that should remain untouched.

Keep roots, removal and replacement separate

Pruning normally concerns growth above the ground. Digging out a root system, removing a whole shrub and supplying a replacement should each be specified and priced. Ask what aftercare is needed, who is responsible for it and whether any follow-up visit is included.

Know the full amount before booking

Requesting quotes is free. If you book through Super, its deposit is based on the total job value and is additional to the gardener’s quoted price. Pay the deposit through Stripe and the gardener their full agreed price directly. If the job is cancelled, your Super deposit is refunded. Confirm the deposit amount, combined total and payment timing before booking.

Your questions, answered

Can I have shrubs pruned at any time?

Timing depends on the plant and the purpose of pruning. Identify the shrub and discuss the appropriate season before booking.

Does pruning include removing the cuttings?

Only when the quote says so. Ask for collection and disposal to be included if you do not want to compost the material yourself.

Can a very large shrub be reduced in one visit?

That depends on the species and condition. A gardener may suggest gradual work rather than a severe reduction.

What does shrub pruning cost?

The provider prices the number and size of shrubs, the amount of work and disposal. Photos help, but unfamiliar or mature plants may need a visit.

Is shrub pruning the same as hedge trimming?

No. Individual shrubs may need selective cuts, while a formal hedge is usually maintained as a continuous boundary. Describe which result you need.
