Choose a trim, reduction or removal
Maintaining the outline, reducing the height and removing the hedge are separate scopes. Give current and desired dimensions, the species if known and which faces need attention. Most conifers do not regrow from old bare wood, with exceptions such as yew, so an assessment is needed before promising a severe reduction.
Tall hedges need suitable access and equipment
Photograph the base, top and surroundings from safe positions. Explain steps, uneven ground and any need for access from a neighbouring property. The provider should confirm suitable equipment and experience. A very tall hedge or tree-sized growth may require a specialist assessment rather than an ordinary trimming appointment.
Compare total scope, not only a price per metre
Length alone does not describe the work: height, width, faces, access and amount of reduction all matter. Ask whether gathering and removal are included and whether the quote covers any specialist equipment. A per-metre rate needs a definition of the hedge it applies to; removal of roots or stumps must be separately specified.
Agree repeat care at a suitable time
The plant, intended finish and wildlife affect the schedule. A leylandii screen and a flowering hedge need different decisions. Ask the gardener for a suitable repeat plan and how an active nest would change the visit. Do not assume a quieter season guarantees a discount or makes every cut appropriate.

How much does hedge trimming cost?
There is no fixed national price for hedge cutting & trimming. The gardener sets the quote after reviewing your job. The main factors are hedge height, length and width, number of sides to be cut, access to both sides and the top and amount of reduction and cuttings to remove. Ask for the scope, materials and disposal charges to be clear before you book.
How often should hedges be trimmed?
Many established hedges need trimming once or twice a year, although fast-growing formal hedges may need more frequent attention. The right schedule depends on species, growth rate and the finish you want. Providers can quote for a one-off cut or ongoing hedge maintenance.
When is the best time to cut a hedge?
Timing depends on the hedge species, but wildlife also matters. Active bird nests must not be damaged or disturbed, so providers may delay work if nesting birds are present. For routine maintenance, tell the provider the hedge type if known and let them confirm an appropriate time to cut it.
Does hedge trimming include waste removal?
It varies. Hedge work can create a large volume of cuttings, so some providers include removal and others charge separately. If you want all hedge waste taken away, make that clear in the quote request so you can compare like-for-like prices.
Can a gardener cut a very tall hedge?
Some can, but tall hedges may require ladders, platforms, specialist tools or additional safety measures. Include the approximate height and access details in your request. Our team can then pass the job to providers who are willing and equipped to handle that type of hedge.
How much does hedge removal cost?
Hedge removal is priced separately from trimming. The provider needs the species if known, length, height, access and whether roots or stumps must also be removed. Ask for cutting, root work, equipment and disposal to be itemised. A published trimming rate cannot reliably price removal of the whole hedge.
