Hedge cutting cost: what affects your quote?

There is no single price for every garden

Give the approximate dimensions and state how many sides need work. Ask whether the provider needs specialist access equipment, a second person or permission to work from neighbouring land. The quotation should say what happens to the cuttings.

The details that change the price

Routine trimming and a major height reduction are different briefs. Explain the result you want and ask the gardener to confirm whether it is suitable for that hedge before work starts.

• Amount of reduction and cuttings to remove

What to put in your quote request

Good details reduce the chance of comparing different jobs. Include the following before asking for a price.

• Send a photo from each accessible side
• State the desired height or amount to remove
• Identify the hedge species if known
• Mention neighbouring boundaries and any signs of nesting birds

Compare the whole offer

Put each quote alongside the same checklist: agreed work, included materials, removal and disposal, visit length or completion basis, and proposed dates. Ask whether the total includes any applicable VAT and extra charges. Do not compare a labour-only offer with an all-in price.

If the scope changes after a visit, ask for the revised price before the additional work starts. Payment and any deposit arrangements should be clear in writing before you accept a booking.

A light trim and a size reduction are different jobs

A maintenance trim removes recent growth to keep an established outline. Reducing height or width can involve heavier cutting, different equipment and much more material to remove. Give the present and desired dimensions, identify the plant if known, and photograph both ends as well as the full length.

The RHS warns that most conifers do not regenerate from old wood, with exceptions such as yew. Ask the gardener to assess whether the requested finish is achievable before pricing a drastic reduction. The cheapest promise is not useful if it depends on a cut the hedge cannot recover from.

Count the faces and check access

Say whether the quote covers your side, the top and the opposite face. Access to a neighbouring property must be arranged rather than presumed. If equipment would stand on steps, sloping ground or a narrow strip, show it in the initial photographs. Include anything fragile beneath the hedge.

For tall or difficult work, ask the provider which equipment and experience the job requires. Do not treat a routine hedge-trimming quote as an agreement for tree surgery. Identify the loading point and whether all cuttings must leave in the same visit.

Timing and an agreed stopping point

An illustrative brief could say: “Trim the marked hedge to the agreed line, retain its screening purpose, clear cuttings from the path and quote for removal. Please assess the species, access and any active nests before confirming when the work can proceed.”

The England guidance on wild-bird protection covers nests in use or being built. A calendar date alone does not establish that cutting is suitable. Ask the gardener how work will be postponed or adjusted if an active nest is found; check the relevant national guidance outside England.
