Use the published benchmark above as an initial budgeting reference, then request a price for the actual job. It is third-party guidance rather than a rate set by Get Gardening Quotes. Compare the same scope, tax basis and extras before accepting any offer.
Before comparing regular prices, confirm whether the first cut has an additional charge. Describe steps and narrow gates that might prevent larger equipment reaching the lawn. Ask whether a missed visit changes the next price if the grass becomes longer.
The details that change the price
For a useful comparison, specify the finish as well as the area. Cutting, strimming and removing clippings are different tasks; confirm all three if you need them.

What to put in your quote request
Good details reduce the chance of comparing different jobs. Include the following before asking for a price.
- Estimate the size or send a wide photograph
- Show the narrowest gate and any steps
- Say when the lawn was last cut
- Choose your preferred frequency and clipping arrangement
Compare the whole offer
Put each quote alongside the same checklist: agreed work, included materials, removal and disposal, visit length or completion basis, and proposed dates. Ask whether the total includes any applicable VAT and extra charges. Do not compare a labour-only offer with an all-in price.
If the scope changes after a visit, ask for the revised price before the additional work starts. Payment and any deposit arrangements should be clear in writing before you accept a booking.

Measure the lawn and describe the first cut
Give approximate lawn dimensions, preferably with a photo showing the whole area. Mention separate front and rear lawns, slopes, steps, narrow gates and objects that must be moved. The mowing area matters more than the size of the entire property. If you cannot measure it, show enough context for the provider to ask useful follow-up questions.
An overgrown first cut may involve preparation, several stages and collecting much more material than a routine visit. Ask for that first-cut price separately from repeat cuts. Edging, strimming around obstacles, clipping collection and clearing paths should each be either included or explicitly left out.
Frequency changes the annual comparison
The RHS ties mowing frequency to growth, weather and the desired lawn style. A conventional lawn and a deliberately longer wildlife area require different plans. Agree the areas to leave longer and how visits can change during slow growth rather than assuming a rigid calendar is always appropriate.
For a recurring quote, compare the estimated programme total using the actual number of proposed visits. Ask about minimum visit charges and whether a missed cut changes the price of the next one. Request the postponement policy before wet weather creates the first disagreement.
Example: a lawn-only request
“Please quote for mowing the front and rear lawns shown in the photos, trimming their edges and leaving paths clear. Please include clipping collection and say whether removal is extra. The rear gate and grass height are shown separately. I would also like a price for regular visits after this first cut.” This is an illustrative request, not a claimed customer result.
If you also want feeding, weed treatment, scarifying, aeration or repairs, name those tasks separately. Mowing controls the height of grass; it does not automatically include a lawn renovation programme.
