Send a photo of the entire pile with something to show scale. List soil, timber and mixed rubbish separately. Ask whether the quoted price includes loading from where the material is now or assumes it will be moved to a kerbside collection point.

The details that change the price

Check collection and disposal, not just the vehicle size. Household garden waste should go to an authorised collector where required; use your national regulator or council guidance to check the arrangements.

What to put in your quote request

Good details reduce the chance of comparing different jobs. Include the following before asking for a price.

Compare the whole offer

Put each quote alongside the same checklist: agreed work, included materials, removal and disposal, visit length or completion basis, and proposed dates. Ask whether the total includes any applicable VAT and extra charges. Do not compare a labour-only offer with an all-in price.

If the scope changes after a visit, ask for the revised price before the additional work starts. Payment and any deposit arrangements should be clear in writing before you accept a booking.

Describe the load in a way a collector can price

Give dimensions of the pile or the number and size of containers, with photos showing their contents. Do not use “a few bags” without showing the bags. Distinguish loose leaves and grass from thick branches, soil, turf, timber and mixed household rubbish. A pile that looks similar in size can require different handling.

Ask how a load-based price is measured and what happens if the final volume exceeds it. For bags, confirm whether they must be supplied, filled or returned. If the waste still needs cutting or gathering, say so: a collection-only quote may start with material already prepared beside an accessible loading point.

Check the business and the disposal route

Use GOV.UK’s household-waste guidance to find the relevant carrier register for your nation. Check the identity of the business doing the collection, not just a name in an advert. Keep the quote and agreed waste description so you can identify who collected it.

Ask the provider to explain where the material will be taken and which materials they cannot accept. A household recycling-centre booking is not automatically available to a commercial collector. Council collections and professional removal have different acceptance rules.

Compare keeping suitable material with removing it

If there is room and you want to compost, decide which garden material can usefully remain before requesting collection. The RHS composting guide covers mixing green and brown ingredients. Material kept on site should have an agreed destination, rather than being left wherever unloading is easiest.

Illustrative request: “Collect the pictured pile of hedge cuttings and bagged grass from the side passage. There is no soil or rubble in this load. Please confirm the volume allowance, loading, transport, disposal and any charge if the photographs underestimate the quantity.”
