Request the date you need, then confirm it
Include the date of an event, sale photograph session or tenancy handover, with alternative access dates where possible. Spring and autumn tidy-ups can be requested, but the provider needs to consider the tasks and plant condition. A preferred date becomes a booking only when the scope and appointment are agreed.
List the tasks in order of importance
Mowing, edging, weeding, leaf gathering and suitable light cutbacks can be combined. Mark anything to leave for wildlife or later assessment. If a visit has a fixed time allowance, tell the gardener what must be completed first. A request to tidy everything cannot show which unfinished task would matter most.
Decide whether the result is a reset or routine upkeep
A one-off tidy brings accessible tasks together. Continuing maintenance repeats agreed care; clearance deals with heavier unwanted growth or material. If some sections need more than tidying, photograph them separately and ask for an additional scope. This avoids treating a heavily neglected garden as a standard short visit.
Include the final handling of leaves and cuttings
Ask whether material is gathered, bagged, loaded and removed, or retained in an agreed composting area. An overflowing household bin is not a disposal plan. If mixed rubbish, soil or timber is present, identify it separately so the provider can confirm what is included and what needs a different collection.

The main factors are number of tasks and garden size, current condition and time since the last visit, access and waste volume and whether one visit or staged work is needed. Is waste removal included in a garden tidy-up?
It depends on the provider. A tidy-up can create bags of leaves, cuttings and branches, so ask providers to state whether collection and disposal are included. Adding this requirement at the start avoids comparing a cheaper quote that leaves waste behind with one that removes everything.
